Lampeter is a small town in Ceredigion in South Wales. Lampeter's main claim to fame is almost certainly its university, from which my daughter, Michelle, has just graduated.
St. David's College was founded in 1822 by the Bishop of St Davids, Thomas Burgess, and opened in 1827. It was the first degree-awarding institution in England and Wales, after the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and pre-dates the Universities of London and Durham and the University of Wales Aberystwyth.
The institution remained independent until 1972 when it entered the (federal) University of Wales. Its title changed then to St David's University College and its degrees were those of the University of Wales. Its current title is the University of Wales, Lampeter
Over the years, the institution has grown considerably, from 60 students in 1827 to 350 in 1972, to about 1800 in 2003. The subjects taught have expanded likewise. In 1827, the subjects taught were Classics, Theology, Philosophy, English. In 2003, the subjects include English, Welsh, Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology, History, Philosophy, Theology, Information Technology, Anthropology.
